SOLARIS concept: a self-sufficient solar electric motorcycle

Attempts to build solar cars have largely fallen short, but European studio MASK Architects has shifted the idea to two wheels. That’s how SOLARIS emerged—the first concept motorcycle capable of charging solely from sunlight.

Its centerpiece is a set of extendable wing-like panels that deploy when the bike is stationary. The layout expands the surface area of the solar cells by roughly 150%, making it possible to top up the battery without a wall socket. In formal terms, SOLARIS is a self-sufficient electric bike that needs neither charging stations nor fuel.

The developers are not sharing detailed specs, but it is known that the model carries a lithium-ion battery, a solar controller, and a real-time energy distribution system. The process can be managed through its proprietary app.

The motorcycle also features a high-torque electric motor, regenerative braking, and a lightweight frame made from aluminum and carbon. Still, the concept raises doubts: the intricate panel mechanism takes up significant space, looks vulnerable, and is unlikely to suit everyday use. Even as a concept, durability and storage seem like the biggest hurdles.
