Next-gen BYD Dolphin: over 500 km range, RWD and multi-link suspension
BYD is gearing up for a thorough update of one of its most popular EVs, the compact Dolphin. Launched in 2021 as the first model in the Ocean lineup, it now faces fresher rivals like the MG4, so the second generation is set to step up its technology in a big way.
Early prototypes point to an evolutionary design. The brand’s signature flowing lines remain, but the front end looks sharper and the overall silhouette reads more like a classic hatchback, moving away from any hint of a minivan. Dimensions will stay close to the current car (around 4.3 meters), and the rear lights will keep the family look with a Chinese knot motif.
The real leap is technical. The new Dolphin will adopt higher-capacity CTB batteries, pushing WLTP range beyond 500 kilometers and making long trips more realistic. A shift to rear-wheel drive and a new multi-link suspension are aimed at sharpening handling, which should make the car feel more composed and engaging on the road.
Second-generation Blade batteries will improve cold-weather resilience: at minus 30 degrees Celsius they retain up to 82% of capacity. There will also be a PHEV DM-i version for those who still find a fully electric range insufficient—an option that broadens the car’s appeal without complicating the concept.
The launch is expected in summer 2026. European versions will likely be built locally: BYD is constructing plants in Hungary and Turkey and preparing a third in Europe, with Spain among the front-runners.
