Half Its Value Vanished in Five Years, Yet It Could Be a Bargain

iSeeCars says 38.2%, CarEdge 43.5% — the 2021 Sierra 1500 bled value fast. Yet the cleanest used examples still command a premium, and next to a new one they look like a steal.

A dream pickup for almost half price? It sounds too good, but the math of the US used market says exactly that. Buyers are increasingly walking past dealerships and eyeing pre-owned trucks: the new 2027 GMC Sierra 1500 is already on the way, which means fresh examples could get pricier. Against that backdrop, analysts have tallied how much value the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 shed in just five years. The answer is striking — but with a big caveat.

According to iSeeCars, the Sierra 1500 loses around 38.2% of its original value over that span. CarEdge is even harsher — 43.5%. And Kelley Blue Book pegs a base 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 with a Crew Cab, four-wheel drive and a standard bed at roughly $25,700 on average. Against a $43,090 sticker back in 2021, that is nearly a 40.4% drop. Almost half the value — gone.

But live listings paint a different, pricier picture. Clean 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 trucks with four-wheel drive, sensible mileage and no ugly history more often go for $30,000–32,000. That is closer to a 30% loss, not 40. And still — a chasm next to a new one: the 2026 Sierra 1500 starts at $38,300 for the base Pro, while a comparably equipped Elevation kicks off at $50,500.

Against its rivals, the Sierra holds up unevenly. iSeeCars figures the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 drops 39.3% over five years, the Ford F-150 37.9%, and the Toyota Tundra just 21.4%. Now there is the real champion of value retention. CarEdge, however, flips the script: in its view the F-150 falls hardest — 49.5% — while the Sierra loses 43.5%.

The takeaway for buyers is simple and sweet: a five-year-old Sierra 1500 can be a smart alternative to a new pickup. But here is the catch — the most tempting examples sell well above the average estimates. You will have to fight for a good one.
