Hyundai and Toray advance carbon composite R&D for safer, more efficient vehicles
The signing ceremony took place on October 24 at Hyundai Motor Group’s headquarters in Seoul, Korea. Among the key participants were Heung Soo Kim, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Strategy at Hyundai Motor Group, and Miki Terada, CEO of Toray Group’s Advanced Composite Materials Division.
Building on a strategic cooperation agreement signed in April 2024, the two companies are moving ahead with joint development of high-performance composite materials such as carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to improve vehicle safety and efficiency. The continued collaboration signals a steady, practical push in materials innovation.
As part of this effort, Hyundai Motor Group will handle design work and assess the suitability and effectiveness of advanced materials and components at its Materials R&D Center, which is responsible for developing and validating new body materials. Development and production of carbon composite materials will be undertaken by Toray Group’s global subsidiaries. The clear division of roles points to a streamlined path from lab validation to real-world application.
