Rivian update adds Apple, Google and Samsung Wallet digital keys to Gen 2 R1S and R1T
Rivian has rolled out software update 2025.46, bringing full Digital Key support to second‑generation R1S and R1T models. The vehicles already include UWB chips, but until now the tech worked only through the Bluetooth-based app. With the update, owners can keep their key in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Samsung Wallet, and use it on compatible smartwatches.
UWB enables precise phone positioning, allowing the vehicle to unlock automatically as you approach. NFC is supported as well: even with a depleted phone, doors can be opened for up to five hours thanks to Power Reserve. Owners can also share digital keys with other users—up to eight per vehicle.
This functionality is limited to Gen 2 models due to hardware constraints in the previous generation. In parallel, Rivian is advancing its Autonomy Platform Plus, set against solutions from Tesla. For shoppers weighing modern EVs, the update hits a practical sweet spot: everyday convenience often tips the scales as much as the spec sheet.
