Lexus finally admits the GX550 was missing something obvious
No facelift, no new engine — but the GX550's biggest annoyance is finally getting fixed, and one off-road trim is getting a tire upgrade too.
Lexus is quietly preparing the first real update for the current GX550 — no facelift, no new engine. The refreshed SUV is expected to be unveiled on September 24, 2026, with production starting October 1. The headline changes target rear-passenger comfort and the off-road-focused Overtrail+.
Lexus itself hasn't confirmed the timing or the equipment list yet. But the most obvious fix has been a long time coming — rear seat ventilation. Right now, the Japanese-market GX550 version L and Overtrail+ heat the outer rear seats but can't cool them; ventilation is front-only. After the update, rear seat cooling is reportedly set to become standard on both trims.
Lexus's own configurator confirms the current cars really do lack the feature. Standard equipment is set to expand more broadly, too. A front and rear dashcam, a digital rearview mirror, and Digital Key are all expected to become standard. The Mark Levinson audio system, based on the leaked info, stays an option. So does the hitch receiver — the Japanese source lists it explicitly among the options that will NOT move to standard equipment.
For the GX550 Overtrail+, the changes go beyond the cabin. The 265/65R18 tires are reportedly being swapped for chunkier all-terrain 265/70R18s. The calculated wheel diameter grows from roughly 802 to 828 mm — about 26.5 mm more. If the suspension geometry stays untouched, the taller rubber alone could add around 13 mm of clearance under the axles and other diameter-dependent points.
The usual trade-off applies: slightly different on-road manners and more tire noise. Meanwhile, the long-rumored hybrid is reportedly not part of this update. In Japan, the GX550 keeps its 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 and 10-speed automatic. Right now, version L costs 12.7 million yen, and the five-seat Overtrail+ costs 11.95 million yen. Pricing for the updated cars hasn't been announced yet.
