The Volvo EX30 just learned a trick owners never got at purchase
A free OTA update gives the Volvo EX30 V2L power output up to 3 kW, plus Plug & Charge and a redesigned interface.
You might think a car’s capabilities are fixed the day it leaves the factory. Volvo thinks otherwise. A free software update turns the EX30 into a giant power bank: Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) lets it run external devices through the charging port at up to 3 kW and 16 A.
A coffee maker in the middle of nowhere? A fridge during a blackout? Power tools far from an outlet? All of that is now realistic. You will need Volvo’s dedicated V2L adapter, though — it is sold separately. To keep owners from draining the traction battery too far, the EX30 automatically shuts off external power once the state of charge falls below 20%.
But here is the bigger surprise. The feature is not reserved for newly built cars. Volvo is also delivering the software “over the air” to EX30s already on the road. Availability still depends on the country and vehicle configuration. V2L is intended for CCS2 markets across EMEA, APAC and Latin America. It is not offered for the EX30 in the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan or Japan.
And that is not all. Plug & Charge arrives alongside V2L: at a compatible public charger, the driver simply plugs in the cable and the car handles authorization and starts charging without a separate card or app. The limits are tighter here — Volvo says the feature is for European markets and EX30 vehicles from model year 2026 onward.
The update also reshapes the infotainment interface. There is now a customizable contextual bar, while the settings menu has been simplified. Yet V2L is the change that most dramatically alters an EX30 someone already owns. The car gains a capability it may not have had when it was sold — without replacing the car itself.
