This Outlander can keep power and communications alive when infrastructure fails
The NERV Outlander PHEV combines Starlink, Japan’s Q-ANPI satellite system and up to 1,500 W of onboard AC power for disaster zones.
A company crossover? Not anymore. Mitsubishi has turned the Outlander PHEV into a true disaster-response command post on wheels, with its own electricity supply and two separate satellite communication channels. Since September 1, the fifth NERV vehicle — a 5LA-GN0W based on the BLACK Edition — has been operating in Tokyo. It can supply up to 1,500 W through AC100V, connect to the internet via Starlink and separately transmit data through Japan’s “Michibiki” satellite system. And this is no experiment: Mitsubishi and Gehirn have officially put the project into service.
But the most interesting part is not the striking livery. What happens if terrestrial communications simply disappear? Starlink is intended to preserve internet access and Wi-Fi, while the Q-ANPI terminal uses “Michibiki” to send shelter locations and status, evacuee numbers and information about their safety. At the same time, the vehicle can power computers, lighting, chargers and other equipment at relief points.
The choice of vehicle is no accident either. The current Japanese Outlander PHEV has a 22.7 kWh traction battery, while Mitsubishi quotes up to 106 km of engine-off driving for the M grade and up to 102 km for the other versions. Its built-in AC100V outlets can provide a combined maximum of 1,500 W.
Now for the number that sounds almost unbelievable: with a full battery and a full tank, Mitsubishi estimates the Outlander PHEV can provide enough energy for roughly 11 days of average household consumption when the vehicle’s generating capability is used. The calculation assumes about 10 kWh per day. But there is an important caveat. This does not mean the emergency vehicle can continuously deliver 1,500 W for all 11 days — actual operating time depends on load, connection method, generation mode and losses.
The Outlander PHEV itself remains one of Mitsubishi’s key models: in Japan it has ranked first in the PHEV category for two consecutive fiscal years. The NERV version adds twin-motor all-wheel drive, S-AWC, seven drive modes and cold-climate equipment. In other words, this is not just a mobile battery, but a vehicle designed to reach places where normal infrastructure has already failed.
The new No. 5 replaces the previous Outlander PHEV, the fourth vehicle in the project. Gehirn now has two active vehicles: No. 3 based on the Eclipse Cross PHEV and the new No. 5. Both are based in Tokyo and can be dispatched to affected areas on request. Mitsubishi’s disaster-response program extends far beyond NERV, too: the company has already signed disaster-relief agreements with more than 200 Japanese municipalities.
