Android Auto dims Google Maps just as navigation gets more immersive
Google is testing a much darker Maps interface in Android Auto, dimming both the map and turn guidance while Immersive Navigation adds more visual detail.
Google is dialing back one of Android Auto's brightest elements — and the difference is obvious at a glance. The company is testing a new Google Maps look that makes the map darker even in light mode, while the next-turn panel swaps its vivid background for dark gray. But don't celebrate the update just yet: the interface was found in Android Auto beta 17.6.663424, and it may never reach a wide release.
Android Authority researchers managed to activate the hidden interface manually. In light mode, Google is experimenting with a darker map surface and a less attention-grabbing turn indicator. At night, the change is even more pronounced: the map turns almost charcoal, while the current turquoise guidance background also gives way to dark gray. One curious detail — the connected Android phone did not adopt the same color scheme. That suggests the experiment may be limited to Android Auto for now.
And all of this is happening against the backdrop of a much bigger Google Maps overhaul. Google has already begun rolling out Immersive Navigation, its biggest navigation update in more than a decade. It moves in almost the opposite direction: the map becomes richer and more detailed with 3D buildings, overpasses and terrain, while lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights and road signs stand out more clearly. A contradiction? More likely a search for balance: Google is giving drivers more information while trying to make the in-car display less glaring.
Google has not officially announced the new color scheme or given a launch timeline. The authors of the APK teardown also caution that this could be nothing more than an experiment, or even a quirk of the current beta build. For now, then, this is not a promised update — just a glimpse of what Google Maps in Android Auto might become soon.
