FSD can now seize control before the driver even asks
FSD Supervised 14.3.9 can activate without a driver command in critical scenarios, using steering as well as braking to try to avoid a frontal crash.
Tesla has just moved the line on what a car may do without waiting for the driver. In FSD Supervised 14.3.9, the system can activate itself in a critical situation. The trigger is Automatic Collision Evasion: if a frontal crash appears unavoidable and braking alone may not be enough, the car can try something more decisive.
And it does not stop at braking. After FSD activates automatically, it is supposed to steer the car out of danger and then continue driving. There is a second scenario too: the system may step in if it detects a serious loss of driver attention, for example when the person reaches toward the rear seat, or if it concludes that FSD was turned off by mistake.
This is where things get genuinely interesting. It is no longer the familiar setup in which the electronics simply try to stop the car before an obstacle. Automatic Collision Evasion can use the wider FSD toolset, including steering. In other words, the car may try not only to slow down, but to escape the crash.
At the same time, FSD 14.3.9 watches the person behind the wheel more closely. Tesla says gaze tracking has improved, the system handles glasses more reliably, and monitoring is more accurate in difficult lighting. FSD is also meant to recover more gracefully from temporary faults instead of dropping out unnecessarily.
But there is an important catch behind the dramatic Full Self-Driving name. This does not make a Tesla fully autonomous. Its formal status is unchanged: this is FSD Supervised, and the driver must keep watching the road and be ready to intervene immediately.
There is no reason to rush out and look for the feature in every Tesla yet, either. The release notes refer to build 2026.27.5 for HW4, which at the time of publication is listed as a preliminary employee release. So broad availability of Automatic Collision Evasion across eligible cars may still take time.
Still, the key shift has already happened. Previously, the driver chose when to turn FSD on. In a critical situation, the car may now make that choice itself — and that change matters far more than another incremental line in a neural-network changelog.
