Your BMW can now become a rolling teacher for its own driver aids
BMW is changing how camera data is handled: after certain driving events, up to 120 seconds of raw footage can reach its protected servers to improve ADAS.
BMW cameras can now send up to 120 seconds of road footage to the company’s servers after a single event. And the biggest change arrives in mid-September: the recording may be uploaded before faces and license plates are blurred inside the car. BMW says this gives its driver-assistance systems more “real-world” material to learn from.
This is not continuous surveillance, however. BMW says data is recorded only after predefined trigger events. Examples include an Emergency Brake Assistant warning or intervention, a sudden evasive maneuver, or the detection of an unexpected obstacle. Along with video, the system may store radar and ultrasonic sensor data, GPS coordinates, recording time, speed, steering angle, brake-pedal position, and information about lighting and weather.
The crucial shift is in image processing. From April until the gradual changeover in September 2026, faces of other road users and license plates were blurred in the vehicle whenever possible before upload. Under the new approach, the original recording can first enter the protected BMW Blackbox environment, where software analyzes it automatically. If a developer later needs to access an individual clip, faces and license plates must be blurred before playback.
There is another key condition: collection works only after the customer has given prior consent. After a successful transfer, BMW removes identifying vehicle data, including the VIN, before the material is used for development and analysis, while the temporary copy is deleted automatically from the car. The company also says its systems are not designed to identify pedestrians, cyclists, or other road users.
The program currently covers the BMW iX3, i3, X5 and 7 Series equipped with the required version of BMW Operating System X. In its official release, the company also refers to future new models and model updates fitted with the necessary sensors and data-processing architecture.
This is where the Software-Defined Vehicle stops sounding like presentation jargon. A production car no longer just receives OTA updates — with the owner’s consent, it can also become a source of real road scenarios that BMW can use to improve future versions of ADAS and partially automated driving functions.
BMW says the data-collection program is being rolled out in Germany and other countries in the European Economic Area in line with local law. Availability can therefore differ by market, while software improvements trained on European road data may later reach other regions where BMW supports the relevant functions and OTA updates.
