China builds it, Japan defines it — EMTA is betting everything on kei EVs

A China-built EV tuned in Japan sounds risky. EMTA wants to prove the formula can deliver kei-car pricing, local quality and a four-model lineup by 2029.

The formula is almost provocative: EMTA's first car will be built in China, but a Japanese team will decide what it must become for Japan. This is not just another imported Chinese EV. It is the opening move for a brand that plans to enter the kei-car segment in 2027 and ultimately grow into a full-fledged Japanese automaker.

EMT is backed by five Japanese and Chinese partners: Autobacs Seven, Anest Iwata, Chery Automobile, Gotion High-tech and Jiangsu Yueda Group. In May, the company unveiled the EMTA brand and laid out an ambitious plan: start with a battery-electric Japanese kei car, then expand the lineup to four models by 2029.

And this is where things get interesting. The first car will be produced in China on an EMT line, but the Japanese R&D center gets the key role: it will define specifications, tune the software, handle local testing and certification, and oversee quality. Future projects are supposed to move progressively further under EMT's own control, with vehicle production in Japan planned for a later stage of the strategy.

The compact EVs will use the Magic EV architecture with an integrated eAxle and a battery mounted under the floor. V2H, V2L, OTA updates and advanced driver-assistance features are all on the list. But the numbers buyers want most are still hidden: EMTA has not disclosed the exact battery capacity, driving range or final price of its first production model.

Price could be the project's first cold shower. EMTA wants to keep it at the level of gasoline kei cars or even below and is considering several battery options. But the field is no longer empty: BYD launched the RACCO in Japan on July 28, 2026, priced from 2.145 million yen. Depending on the version, the Chinese rival offers an official range of 210 to 320 km.

For sales, EMT plans to use the network of shareholder Autobacs, supplemented by smaller retail outlets. The result is an unusual hybrid: Chinese manufacturing capacity is supposed to provide speed and low costs, while the Japanese team must turn the underlying hardware into a car that does not feel foreign on local roads.

Before the price fight begins, EMTA has a much more basic exam to pass. Full adaptation testing in Japan is due to start in September 2026, but the prototype failed to reach the August 31 presentation because typhoons delayed its ship from China. So the next real test will not be another promise of “Japanese quality”, but the prototype actually appearing on Japanese roads. That is when we will see how convincingly China and Japan can build one car together.
