When electric costs diesel money, the Musso choice gets surprisingly complicated
KGM has put its electric and diesel pickups into almost the same price bracket in Britain. Once price stops deciding the argument, towing, payload, tax and charging suddenly matter much more.
KGM has done something almost unthinkable with the Musso EV: it has virtually erased the price gulf between battery power and diesel. In Britain, the electric Musso starts at £39,995 including VAT and a £5,000 government grant. The regular diesel Musso starts at £32,980 before VAT, so once tax is added the difference becomes almost symbolic.
And this is where things get interesting. What does a buyer choose when an electric powertrain no longer costs thousands of pounds extra? Suddenly, price stops being the main argument.
The Musso EV gets an 80.6 kWh battery and can travel up to 235 miles, or about 378 km, on the WLTP cycle. The electric pickup can tow up to 2.3 tonnes and carry roughly 690 kg. DC fast charging at up to 120 kW can restore a substantial amount of energy in around 36 minutes.
But it is far too early to write off diesel. The regular Musso can tow up to 3.5 tonnes and carry more than a tonne. For hard daily work, that is a huge gap. The electric version plays on a different field — one where maximum payload is only needed occasionally.
Then taxes enter the game. After Britain changed the rules, most new double-cab pickups became much less attractive as company cars. EVs are different: KGM quotes a Benefit-in-Kind rate of about 4% for the Musso EV in 2026/27 and a tax bill starting at roughly £30 per month.
No wonder private buyers are no longer the only ones looking at the Musso EV. Fleets and small businesses are starting to count money rather than emissions. At that point, an electric pickup stops being an expensive green alternative and becomes a tool for cutting total ownership costs.
That creates a curious paradox: the Musso EV does not need to kill the diesel Musso. Each has its own territory. Diesel wins on towing and payload, while the electric version answers with lower running costs, tax advantages and easier urban use.
That is exactly what makes KGM's experiment so interesting. As long as an electric pickup costs noticeably more, buyers look at the sticker first. But once that gap disappears, the “diesel or electric” debate instantly becomes practical. How much do you tow? How far do you drive each day? Can you charge easily? That is when the real choice begins.
