The version number changed, but Android Auto's real transformation is still ahead
Android Auto 17.7 is rolling out with bug fixes, while Google's bigger Material 3 Expressive overhaul remains a separate update still to come.
The number changed, but the revolution did not arrive. The stable branch of Android Auto has moved to version 17.7: build 17.7.6636 appeared on September 11. But anyone waiting for a dramatic visual overhaul will have to wait a little longer — the release did not bring a noticeable interface redesign.
Google has not published a detailed changelog for version 17.7. The build notes mention only bug fixes and other improvements. That means it is too early to link this release to fixes for specific Google Maps issues, including the disappearing speedometer. The green Android Auto icon is not exclusive to 17.7 either: its rollout began with version 17.6.
And this is where things get more interesting. Google is preparing the major Android Auto changes separately: the company has announced a new Material 3 Expressive interface, widgets, edge-to-edge Google Maps and Immersive Navigation. Supported vehicles are also promised Full HD video playback at 60 fps — only while parked.
So what does that leave us with? For now, Android Auto 17.7 looks primarily like a technical release. The build number has changed, but the main user-facing update — with a new design, widgets, expanded maps and video — is being developed separately and is expected to roll out in stages during 2026.
