Ford wants you to nudge a pickup forward from outside the cab
A new Ford patent turns an exterior handle into a low-speed control. One press could inch a pickup forward or backward without anyone sitting behind the wheel.
A pickup you can practically nudge with a press, without even climbing behind the wheel? Ford has patented exactly that idea. Ford Global Technologies received U.S. Patent No. 12,728,722 for a system that lets a person outside the vehicle move it a short distance. The patent was granted on September 8, 2026, although the application was filed on June 23, 2023 and published in late 2024.
One of the strangest versions puts a pressure or force sensor in the extendable bed-step handle. A person presses it, the controller reads the input and sends a command to the powertrain. Press harder or hold it longer, and the vehicle may travel farther. This is not normal driving: the patent describes short, controlled pulses forward or backward.
Why move a heavy pickup this way at all? Work is the point. The system is aimed at jobs where the truck has to be repositioned again and again by only a few meters, such as unloading soil, gravel or other loose material. Ford is not limiting the idea to one handle either: the exterior interface could sit on the body, bumper or bed sides, and movement could even be controlled with a separate wired or wireless remote.
The crucial part is protection against an accidental start. The system may require a separate dead-man switch, cut propulsion as soon as the control is released and lock out the mode after an excessively long continuous press. It sounds almost like remote control for a huge pickup, but there is an important catch: a patent does not guarantee this feature will appear on production Ford models. For now, the company has simply secured the concept of this unusual form of external vehicle control.
