Toyota's new G20E 2.0L turbo makes 400+ hp in GR Yaris, production by 2026

Toyota has wrapped up testing of its new G20E turbocharged four-cylinder, a 2.0-liter engine developed for the brand’s performance models. Delivering more than 400 horsepower, it made its debut in a mid-engine GR Yaris race car during the sixth round of the Super Taikyu series at Okayama. Company chairman Akio Toyoda was behind the wheel and crossed the line third, a choice of venue that quietly signals confidence in the hardware under endurance conditions.

The G20E is derived from the three-cylinder G16E found in the GR Yaris, GR Corolla, and Lexus LBX. The new unit runs on gasoline and is also set up for fuel containing 20% ethanol. Toyota notes that the engine can be mounted either longitudinally or transversely, opening the door to use across different models, including sports cars slated for 2026. That packaging freedom points to a modular strategy and broader ambitions for the lineup.

Alongside the engine, the GR Yaris gained a new all-wheel-drive system with selectable torque distribution—40:60 or 50:50 between the axles. Series production of vehicles with the G20E is expected by the end of 2026, and Toyota emphasizes that the new family of powertrains is intended to improve efficiency, enhance aerodynamics, and lower the center of gravity in upcoming models. If those aims hold in production, the next wave of Toyota performance cars stands to make a clear step forward.
