Rivian unveils Google Gemini AI assistant and Autonomy Platform upgrades

Rivian plans to unveil an AI assistant along with advances to its in-house autonomous driving system during Autonomy & AI Day. The goal is to make automated driving features more attainable, a move that could sharpen its rivalry with Tesla FSD.

The new voice assistant is expected to replace Amazon Alexa and run on Google Gemini. It will handle conversational tasks and manage vehicle functions. Because Rivian builds on Android Automotive, Google’s capabilities can be integrated directly into the interface, which should make the experience feel more seamless behind the wheel.

The company is also preparing to expand its Autonomy Platform. Training for the models uses AWS, while the most advanced features will require new hardware set to appear on the R2 crossover. Tying next-gen capabilities to fresh components follows a familiar playbook—and, given the ambitions here, it comes across as a pragmatic choice.
