BMW’s Munich plant to build only EVs by 2027; 3 Series shifts to Dingolfing

BMW’s historic plant in Munich is on the cusp of an all-electric future. By the end of 2027, the site will build only battery-powered models, closing the chapter on conventional cars made there — the famed 3 Series included.

This decision brings an end to production of the petrol 3 Series specifically in Munich after decades of uninterrupted assembly at the facility. The next generations of the model will move to the group’s plant in Dingolfing.

In Dingolfing, the new BMW 3 Series (G50) will roll out alongside the 5 and 7 Series. Production of the next-generation 3 Series is expected to start in the fall of 2026, roughly in November.

For Munich, parting with the 3 Series line feels symbolic: the sedan long served as a touchstone for the brand’s driving character. Shifting it to Dingolfing neatly rearranges the production map as the home plant commits fully to EVs, and the timing underscores how decisively the lineup is being reshaped.
