Legacy Overland drops a 550-hp LS3 V8 into the Land Rover LR3

American outfit Legacy Overland has unveiled an unusual build based on the third-generation Land Rover Discovery, known in the U.S. as the LR3. In place of the factory engines, there is now a tuned 6.8‑liter GM LS3 gasoline V8 under the hood, rated at 550 hp and 746 Nm of torque—nearly double what the early‑2000s production model offered.

The new powertrain is paired with a GM 6L80 automatic and is tied into Land Rover’s stock electronics. The company states that all original systems remain, including the permanent four-wheel drive and the British electronic architecture. Seamlessly marrying GM hardware with LR software is typically the hardest part in projects like this; if everything works as claimed, that’s the standout achievement.

The project also reworks the driveline with custom prop shafts, reinforced crossmembers, and updated suspension and brakes.

Exterior

Visually, the SUV is almost unchanged. Additions include a winch, a roof rack, a rear ladder, and new exhaust tips. The restrained approach suits the Discovery’s clean lines and keeps attention on the substance beneath.

Interior

The cabin keeps its original layout but gains new instruments, an updated infotainment system, improved audio, and leather-trimmed seats. The refresh nudges the LR3’s feel closer to current standards without losing its straightforward character.

As a whole, the build showcases deep, thoughtful tuning: the classic off-roader retains its trail-ready temperament while delivering performance on par with today’s more powerful SUVs.
