Kia recalls 5,000 Sportage X-Line SUVs over tow hitch software conflict

According to Kia America, approximately 5,000 Sportage SUVs—both gasoline and plug-in hybrid—are being recalled over a software issue. The campaign targets X-Line models fitted with the 4.2-inch instrument cluster display and a factory Kia tow hitch.

In these crossovers, the tow hitch control module can conflict with the 4.2-inch display and the instrument cluster due to improper communication over the CAN bus. During a cluster reboot, essential driver information may not appear, which means the affected vehicles may not meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

After reviewing owner complaints and conducting tests, Kia determined the issue can be fixed by replacing the current control module with a new unit that has corrected software. The remedy is straightforward, and it’s reassuring that 2026 model-year vehicles are already shipping with upgraded equipment.

The company plans to begin notifying owners of affected vehicles by mail starting February 13, 2026.
