Volkswagen ID. Polo leads new EV lineup, GTI due 2027
Volkswagen’s head of technical development Kai Grünitz is confident the German group isn’t fazed by Chinese carmakers. In a conversation with Autocar, he emphasized that decades of building cars give Europe a natural advantage.
The company is preparing a new wave of attainable EVs: the Volkswagen ID. Polo, ID. Cross, CUPRA Raval, and Skoda Epiq. All four were developed at record pace—36 months—and will be built at the group’s plants in Martorell and Navarra, Spain. The timeline alone hints at a sharper sense of urgency inside the program.
The ID. Polo will turn the ID. 2all concept into a production car, bringing back clean, classic lines and the original people’s-car spirit. Built on the MEB+ platform with front-wheel drive, it sets the tone for a new generation of city-focused EVs.
In 2027, an ID. Polo GTI is slated to arrive with 226 hp, a VAQ electronic limited-slip differential, and the front-drive layout long associated with GTI models. Grünitz compared the GTI badge to Adidas, noting that buyers know exactly what to expect.
Volkswagen positions these ID models as an alternative to Chinese brands while holding onto the philosophy of German engineering and a high standard of quality. Read between the lines, and the focus is squarely on know-how and consistency rather than shortcuts.
