New Santana off-roader based on BAIC BJ30: real capability for less
The revived Spanish brand Santana is expanding its off-road lineup and preparing its most affordable model yet. The newcomer will be built entirely on China’s BAIC BJ30 and aimed at buyers who want a true go-anywhere vehicle without overspending.
The foundation: BAIC BJ30
The upcoming Santana off-roader is a licensed version of the BAIC BJ30, measuring about 4.73 meters in length. In practice, it’s a familiar package already sold in Europe as the ICH-X K3. With the platform and bodywork nearly identical, costs are kept in check and the route to market is faster.
Engineering and powertrain options
Santana has not yet officially detailed the engine lineup, but the direction is clear. Depending on the market, the vehicle could be offered with a gasoline engine, a bifuel setup with gas equipment, or a hybrid powertrain. In other countries, the BAIC BJ30 is available with a 1.5-liter gasoline unit rated at 188 hp and with a hybrid system delivering a combined 410 hp and all-wheel drive. A range-extended configuration, where the combustion engine works solely as a generator, is also possible, which could qualify it for an emissions “Class 0” status.
Positioning and market significance
By its geometry, the new Santana sticks to classic off-roader principles: 220 mm of ground clearance, favorable approach and departure angles, a full suite of off-road modes, a locking differential, and electronic aids. At the same time, a multi-link rear suspension brings it closer to modern SUVs. An expected price around 45,000 euros would make it notably more attainable than the Toyota Land Cruiser, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
The new Santana SUV comes across as a pragmatic return for the brand. Leaning on a Chinese base, pairing it with up-to-date hardware and sharp pricing could turn it into a compelling alternative to the segment’s pricier icons for those who want real capability without paying a badge premium.
