Neutral car colors lead US sales in 2025, Axalta data reveals
A recent report from Axalta confirms an interesting but predictable trend: the American car market continues to lean toward neutral colors. White has once again become the sales leader, despite manufacturers expanding their bright color palettes.
In 2025, 29% of buyers in the U.S. chose white—slightly less than the year before but still a significant share. Black accounted for 23%, while gray made up 22%. Overall, these three neutral shades formed the overwhelming majority of all sales.
Colors like green, yellow, purple, and orange remained within the margin of statistical error, despite their appearance in the palettes of new models.
The situation abroad shows little variation. In South America, white leads with 35%; in Europe, gray holds the top spot at 26%; and in Asia, black dominates at 26%. However, Asia has seen a noticeable rise in interest for unconventional colors: yellow and gold increased demand by 6%, green by 3%, and orange and purple by 2%.
In the U.S., there is also a slight uptick in the popularity of red, green, and golden shades, albeit at very low levels.
Despite the rich selection, the mass-market buyer prefers versatility and simplicity. Neutral colors are easier to resell, age more slowly visually, and are perceived as a safe choice.
According to Axalta representatives, it is the resilience of neutrals that shapes the global palette, though growing interest in more expressive shades could shift trends in the future.
