BMW Tests Updated M5 and Electric M3 at the Nürburgring

BMW is testing two future sports sedans at the Nürburgring: an updated M5 and the first all-electric M3. Both are slated for a 2027 launch.
The electric M3 will be the first high-performance vehicle from the M division without a combustion engine. The new M5, on the other hand, keeps its plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain but is due for a thorough mid-cycle refresh.
Test prototypes show Neue Klasse design cues. Despite the camouflage, the cars reveal a horizontal take on the brand's signature kidney grille and a new iteration of the twin-headlight setup. The M5 has less disguise up front, so large air intakes in the bumper are clearly visible.
At the rear, both models are expected to feature full-width taillights. Similar treatments are already seen on the new i3 and the updated 7 Series and i7.
The cabin is also expected to follow BMW's latest concept. Look for a large central screen, a projection at the base of the windshield, and the elimination of the traditional iDrive controller. The M5 might gain a passenger display akin to the 7 Series.
BMW plans to follow the electric M3 with a gasoline-powered M3 powered by an inline-six, arriving roughly a year later. For those shopping for sports cars in 2026 and beyond, the BMW M lineup will be a transitional affair: electric, hybrid, and gasoline versions will coexist in parallel.
