Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner Lead SUV Durability Ranking
Toyota Land Cruiser and 4Runner top a ranking of SUVs most likely to exceed 320,000 km. The study highlights Toyota's reputation for durability, with several models in the top 10.
Toyota Land Cruiser once again stands as the ultimate symbol of durability among SUVs. In Topspeed's ranking, it claimed the top spot with a 47.5% chance of surpassing 320,000 kilometers. For owners, that figure explains why older Land Cruisers hold their value so well on the used market.
The Toyota 4Runner tied for first place with the same 47.5% probability, while the Toyota Sequoia took third at 41.1%. Toyota swept the podium, reinforcing the brand's reputation for simple engineering, generous safety margins, straightforward powertrains, and extensive experience in harsh conditions.
Further down the list, diversity emerges. The Toyota Highlander scored 32.9%, followed by the Honda Pilot at 31.1% and the Chevrolet Suburban at 28.7%. Also in the top ten are the Honda CR-V with 27.5%, Toyota RAV4 with 27.1%, Subaru Outback with 23.9%, and Acura MDX with 23.6%.
The ranking brings together vehicles with very different purposes. The Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Sequoia, and Suburban are heavy-duty SUVs built for towing and long-distance travel. On the other hand, the CR-V, RAV4, and Outback are family-oriented crossovers where longevity matters for daily commuting rather than expeditions.
For buyers, this list is a helpful guide but no substitute for a thorough inspection. Even the most reliable Land Cruiser can be compromised by poor maintenance, overheating, frame rust, or extreme off-road use. A well-maintained RAV4 or CR-V with a clean history often proves more sensible than a high-mileage "legend" with questionable records.
The takeaway is straightforward: longevity begins with good design but ultimately depends on how the vehicle was cared for. So while the ranking helps choose a model, buyers should still focus on finding a well-kept, specific example.
