Alfa Romeo confirms next-gen Giulia and Stelvio for 2028 launch on STLA Large platform. Gasoline, plug-in hybrid, and electric powertrains available. Quadrifoglio returns.

Alfa Romeo is planning to launch the next-generation Giulia and Stelvio in 2028. According to Autocar, both models will shift to the STLA Large platform and offer a broader range of powertrains than previously expected.

Originally, the new Giulia and Stelvio were slated for a 2026 debut as purely electric vehicles. However, Stellantis revised its plans due to uneven EV demand across regions. Alfa Romeo CEO Santo Ficili stated that the brand must account for the global market and offer internal combustion engines, plug-in hybrids, and battery-electric versions.

The switch to STLA Large required body adaptations to accommodate plug-in hybrids and gasoline engines. Specifically, changes to the front end and more open grilles were needed for better cooling. The new Giulia and Stelvio will be larger, but more aerodynamic shapes are expected to reduce drag and increase range for the electric versions.

Expectations include turbocharged gasoline engines with mild-hybrid systems, PHEVs, and electric versions with batteries ranging from 85 to 118 kWh. The most efficient EVs are claimed to have a range of over 640 km. The Quadrifoglio versions will return with both ICE and electric powertrains. Alfa Romeo is focusing on offering a choice across different markets rather than a single drivetrain type.
