The next Corolla could climb so high in Toyota's hierarchy that it lands right next to the Prius. So what happens to the hybrid icon now?

Toyota Prius spent its whole life as the gold standard of hybrids — and suddenly the threat isn’t coming from outside, it’s coming from its own garage. According to Japanese outlet Mag X, the next Corolla could become so expensive and so advanced that its positioning will brush right up against the Prius.

The Prius is widely seen as one of the key models that made hybrid technology mainstream. But the market has shifted. Electrified versions are now in almost every major manufacturer’s lineup, and inside Toyota itself, hybrids keep multiplying — and they keep getting more interesting.

The next Corolla is expected to launch with several powertrain options at once. Among the possibilities — a full electric version, a hydrogen fuel-cell variant, and the familiar hybrid. That kind of versatility could push the Corolla noticeably higher up the lineup and pull away a chunk of the Prius’s own audience.

In response, Toyota might raise the Prius price to separate the two by status. But it’s a risky move — too steep a sticker could scare off loyal buyers. And if the Prius can’t set itself dramatically apart from Toyota’s other hybrids, its long-term future starts looking shaky.

The new Corolla is set to debut later this year and arrive as a 2027 model. Will Toyota find a way to keep the Prius alive in its own family — or is the hybrid icon finally about to step aside for its younger heir?
