The one-off Phantom Hummingbird turns fragile abalone shell into 190 hand-fitted marquetry pieces after nine months and six development iterations.

Rolls-Royce has proved once again that even cabin trim can become an engineering experiment. The marque has unveiled the one-off Phantom Hummingbird, a Phantom Extended created through Private Office Dubai as a gift for the client's wife. And the real surprise is not the body color: for the first time in Rolls-Royce history, abalone shell has been used for complex marquetry. Developing the process took more than nine months and six iterations.

Using abalone and mother-of-pearl, the craftspeople assembled two hummingbirds on the folding picnic tables — 53 pieces for each bird, with the wings alone made from 18 components. Another 84 fragments form the botanical motif between the rear seats. The blanks are laser-cut 0.06 mm larger than their final size, then every edge is hand-fitted until the joins virtually disappear. Final work on the three panels took 45 hours.

There is one important catch. Hummingbird cannot be called the first Rolls-Royce to use abalone at all. Back in 2017, materials for the Phantom Gallery mentioned Jade green abalone in the clock of the Iridescent Opulence project. What makes this Phantom genuinely new is something more specific — it is the first full-scale use of the fragile material in intricate marquetry.

The rest of the cabin is hardly restrained either, combining Creme Light leather with Moccasin and Tan tones, plus Ash Burr and Silver Birch veneers. The body wears a two-tone Wildberry and White Sands finish, while a hummingbird also appears on the hand-painted Coachline. The price of the private commission has not been disclosed. But Hummingbird is clearly not about a price list: for Rolls-Royce, it is a demonstration of just how far Bespoke can push natural materials.
