Volvo may expand lineup with bigger SUV to rival BMW X7 and Mercedes GLS
Volvo is evaluating a larger SUV than the XC90 and EX90 to meet growing U.S. demand for big three-row SUVs. Could launch by 2026 to compete with premium rivals.
Volvo is considering expanding its lineup with an SUV larger than the current XC90 and electric EX90. CEO Håkan Samuelsson told Automotive News that demand is growing in the U.S. for big three-row SUVs.
The Volvo XC90 is 4.95 meters long, while the EX90 measures 5.04 meters. These models compete with the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE, but the German brands offer larger alternatives like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Volvo isn't in that segment yet, but that could change.
Samuelsson clarified that this isn't a confirmed project. The company is merely evaluating the prospects and market potential for a bigger SUV. He didn't rule out that the XC90 and EX90 might no longer be the largest models in the brand's range in the future.
Volvo has shown interest in such a vehicle before. Back in 2007, there was talk of a flagship SUV project unofficially called the XC100, but it never reached production. If the new project moves forward, the model could become one of the top SUVs by 2026, strengthening Volvo's position in the premium segment.
