Inside Hyundai’s Square Campus: a new European R&D powerhouse
Hyundai Motor Group opens Square Campus in Rüsselsheim: a €150m European R&D center with NVH facilities, EV testing, OTA, cybersecurity and ADAS development.
Hyundai Motor Group announced the opening of a new research complex, Square Campus, in Rüsselsheim, Germany. The €150 million project is the largest investment in the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) since the Round Campus launched in 2003, a clear signal that the group is strengthening its European R&D base.
The 25,000-square-metre site houses one of the world’s largest semi-anechoic chambers for noise, vibration and harshness testing, alongside state-of-the-art dynamometer facilities suited to electric, hybrid and internal-combustion vehicles. This mix should give engineers broader scope to refine acoustics and compare powertrains under consistent conditions.

The center also features an EV charging laboratory, a driving simulator, and departments focused on electronic systems development, including over-the-air update technologies, cybersecurity, and driver-assistance systems. The emphasis on software and electronics reflects where progress in the industry is moving fastest.
Square Campus will serve as a key base for developing new vehicles and innovations for Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, and it supports the company’s target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2045.
