BMW is preparing a surprising move for the facelift of the 5 Series G60, expected in 2027. According to sources, the base diesel version 520d could receive the six-cylinder B57 engine instead of the current four-cylinder unit.

A New Level for the Base Diesel

Currently, the BMW 520d is equipped with the B47 engine, but as part of the update, the model might switch to the more powerful 3.0-liter inline diesel. This refers to the B57 engine, already used in the 540d and considered one of the most technologically advanced diesels on the market.

Its output reaches 286 horsepower and 700 Nm, and thanks to a 48V mild hybrid system, the engine stands out for its smoothness and high efficiency. This shift would effectively elevate the 520d to the level of higher-end versions.

A Market Signal: Diesel Remains

If the rumor is confirmed, it will send an important signal to the European market. Despite pressure from electric vehicles, diesel cars still hold a significant share of sales in the business sedan segment, especially in Germany and Eastern Europe.

By doing this, BMW shows it is not ready to abandon diesel technology and continues to invest in its development.

There is no official confirmation from BMW yet. The G60 facelift is still in the testing phase, and final specifications have not been revealed.

Nevertheless, using the already proven B57 engine appears to be a logical step from a cost and strategy perspective. If the updated 520d does get the six-cylinder, it could become one of the most interesting offerings in its class—combining the performance of higher-end versions with the status of a base model.
