Next-generation Peugeot E-208 brings steer-by-wire Hypersquare
Discover next-gen Peugeot E-208: first Stellantis model with steer-by-wire and Hypersquare yoke on STLA Small. Toyota-supplied system boosts agility and space.
The next-generation Peugeot E-208 will become the first production Stellantis model to use steer-by-wire. Built on the new STLA Small platform designed for compact electric cars, it drops the mechanical link between the wheel and the front axle, freeing up cabin space and sharpening low-speed agility.
The headline feature is the Hypersquare, a compact square yoke with four integrated control zones. It forms part of the latest i-Cockpit layout, which keeps the instruments positioned above the steering wheel. Toyota will supply the system, drawing on a similar setup already used in the bZ4X and Lexus RZ.
Early prototype drives suggest the car behaves more naturally than you might expect. The steering ratio varies with speed, and the limited steering angle removes the need for multiple turns lock-to-lock. At low speeds the car reacts much quicker, easing parking and lending a sportier feel. For a city-sized EV, that blend of quick responses and space efficiency looks like the right move.
Peugeot’s engineers describe the system as the next step in delivering driving pleasure. The technology will roll out to other Stellantis models over time, including a future Opel Corsa set to share production with the new 208 in Zaragoza.
