2. Limited Cargo Volume

Ford equipped the Maverick with clever cargo management features such as the Flexbed system, but its actual cargo volume falls well short of traditional full-size trucks like the F-150. If maximizing load space is a priority, the Maverick's compact dimensions—innovative storage tricks aside—simply won't cut it.

3. AWD Isn't a Substitute for True 4WD

The Maverick's all-wheel-drive system does a fine job on pavement and in the rain, boosting stability and grip. But without a proper 4WD setup—no low-range gearing or locking differentials—it's not ready for real off-road adventures. That makes it a poor fit for anyone looking to venture far from asphalt.

4. Towing and Payload

The Maverick's maximum towing capacity tops out at 4,000 pounds (around 1,800 kg)—modest by pickup standards and dwarfed by full-size contenders like the Ram or Chevrolet Silverado. If your routine involves towing heavy equipment or oversized loads, this compact truck probably isn't the tool for the job.

5. Relatively Weak Engines

The Maverick comes with two powertrain choices: a hybrid and a turbocharged gasoline engine making up to 270 horsepower. That's fine for urban commuting and modest highway cruising. However, when it comes to torque and straight-line punch, it falls behind competitors packing V6 or V8 power. If you're after strong acceleration or have a taste for high-horsepower trucks, the Maverick will likely leave you wanting.
