Mülheim fire service deploys portal-axle Ineos Grenadiers for flood response
Mülheim's fire service adds Ineos Grenadier Station Wagon and Quartermaster with portal axles, 450 mm clearance and 1,050 mm wading for rapid flood response.
The fire and rescue service in the German city of Mülheim an der Ruhr has officially taken delivery of three specialized Ineos Grenadiers. The fleet includes two Grenadier Station Wagons and a Quartermaster pickup. One vehicle of each type is equipped with portal axles, lifting ground clearance to 450 mm and increasing maximum wading depth from 800 to 1,050 mm. The specification was chosen with the region’s frequent flooding and challenging terrain in mind — a pragmatic setup tailored for the job rather than the brochure.

The purchase followed an evaluation of off-road capability, frame durability, and the vehicles’ ability to carry a crew and heavy equipment. The conversion was carried out by German company Letech, a long-standing Ineos partner. The vehicles wear red paint with Hi-Vis markings, a heavy-duty roof rack with warning beacons, additional lighting, BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires, and a 40 mm suspension lift. The result reads like a work tool rather than a showpiece, which is exactly what frontline teams need.
Inside, there are storage systems for rescue equipment and professional communications. Portal-axle versions also get beadlock wheels and a tire-pressure control system. City representatives said the vehicles are needed for rapid access to disaster zones.
