Preorders open in China from 259,800 yuan. The Hi4-Z hits 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, covers 200 km on battery alone and gains a full 260 mm of wheelbase. Sales start July 19.

Tank sales are sliding — down 27.16% in June and 10.62% over the first half of the year — and this is usually the moment when a brand goes quiet. GWM did the opposite. Instead of a quiet facelift, there are 553 revisions, a brand-new Hi4-Z hybrid system and a wheelbase stretched by a quarter of a metre. This isn’t cosmetics. It’s an attempt to rescue a model that carried the entire off-road lineup for years.

So what does it cost in China? The Tank 300L Hi4-T is listed at 259,800 yuan — around 38,320 dollars. The Hi4-Z version asks 269,800 yuan, roughly 39,800 dollars. Sales officially begin on July 19. The petrol version is open for preorder too, but its price is still under wraps.

The car has grown noticeably — it now measures 4886 mm long, 1984 mm wide and 1927 mm tall, with a 3010 mm wheelbase, a full 260 mm more than before. Both hybrid versions revolve around a 2.0-litre turbo engine and electric motors, but that’s where they part ways. The Hi4-T gets a 130 kW front motor, a 37.1 kWh battery, 105 km of electric range on the WLTC cycle, 913 km of total range and a 0–100 km/h sprint in 6.1 seconds. A solid, honest off-roader.

The Hi4-Z, though, is a completely different story. The front motor makes 180 kW, the rear one 200 kW, the battery grows to 59.6 kWh, and the combined system output reaches 560 kW. Electric range is 200 km, total range 1122 km, and the 0–100 km/h dash takes just 4.3 seconds. Picture it — a body-on-frame off-roader accelerating like a hot crossover. A slow diesel? Forget it.

Special attention went to the electronics, and here GWM clearly set out to outdo itself: 27 sensors including a lidar, NOA support, a Coffee OS 3 system with the Coffee GPT voice AI, V2L up to 6 kW and a 2.5-tonne towing capacity. The factory options list even runs to a two-way radio, an oxygen concentrator and satellite communication. GWM isn’t selling just a Tank anymore. It’s an entire ecosystem for anyone heading out to where the roads end.

The updated Tank 300 lands in a crowded field of rugged off-roaders like the Haval H9, Jetour T2, BAIC BJ40, Jaecoo J7/J8 and used Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. But the real question was never power — there is plenty of that. It’s the price, the warranty on a complex PHEV system, and whether service networks are ready to deal with batteries, lidars and clever electronics. The smarter the off-roader gets, the more every mistake costs once the warranty runs out.
