No generator humming in the background — the VW Grand California can now camp for days deep in the woods and simply feed itself power. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has updated its Crafter-based motorhome, and the star of the update is the new Off-grid package, built for drivers who roam far beyond regular campsites.
At the heart of the system are two lithium iron phosphate batteries rated at 40 Ah each, paired with rooftop solar panels. The Grand California 600 gets a 104-watt panel, while the bigger 680 steps up to 174 watts.
The numbers speak for themselves. Compared with the standard 92 Ah AGM battery, usable capacity climbs nearly 40% — from 46 Ah to 64 Ah. And it’s not just “more,” it’s also tougher: the lithium batteries last up to five times longer, resist deep discharge, and handle charging currents up to 200 A. In ECO mode, the system automatically prioritizes solar power — and the panels keep charging even while the van is moving. Buyers who don’t need solar can order the lithium batteries on their own.

Power isn’t the only upgrade. The motorhome now gets a driver attention monitoring system, an optional Intersection Assist, and multimedia with a screen up to 12 inches. Inside, buyers get new Atami Bamboo trim, extra storage niches, and a reworked table.
The battery upgrade alone costs 833 euros. The full Off-grid package starts at 1,719.55 euros for the 600 and 2,326.45 euros for the 680. While rivals keep arguing over generator size, the 2026 Grand California is simply cutting the cord.
