Mercedes-Benz may have hit the brakes. Production of the electric CLA L is reportedly on hold at the Beijing Benz Automotive plant in China — and the reason is more mundane than you’d expect. German outlet MBpassion cites industry sources for the claim. Neither the automaker nor the BBAC joint venture has issued an official statement.
The suspected cause is weak demand. Weak enough that the numbers speak for themselves. According to figures cited by the outlet, just 627 units were registered in China between January and June 2026. January saw 35 registrations, February 21, March 358, April 52, and May 161. June recorded exactly zero.
Does that mean the line has stopped for good? Not necessarily. A single month of zero registrations doesn’t prove a shutdown on its own. Registrations can lag behind production, and inventory can shift between dealers. Until Mercedes-Benz confirms a change to its production plan, it’s more accurate to call this a possible pause than a discontinuation.
What makes it sting is that the CLA L was built specifically for China: compared with the global version, the sedan gets roughly 40 mm more length and wheelbase, engineered squarely for local buyers. The model launched in China in 2025 and is built locally by the Mercedes-Benz and BAIC joint venture.
The CLA L’s rocky debut fits a broader pattern for German premium brands in China. Mercedes-Benz passenger car sales in the country fell 19% in 2025, to 551,900 units. In the first half of 2026, German automakers also reported China deliveries down more than 20%, squeezed by price competition and rising local rivals.
It was previously reported that the Mercedes-Benz CLA will lose its full-width taillight strip.
