The Hot Hatch Is Back, and This Time It Runs on Electrons

Opel just brought the hot hatch back — and this time, there's no engine under the hood. The new Corsa GSE packs an electric motor producing 281 hp and 345 Nm of torque. It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds, making it the quickest production Opel on sale today. Top speed is capped at 180 km/h — seemingly on purpose, to keep the battery from draining too fast.

Power here comes rationed, like currency. In Sport mode, the powertrain unleashes every last horse. Normal mode dials output back to 231 hp, while Eco conserves energy and caps speed at 150 km/h. The battery has a gross capacity of 54 kWh, with 51 kWh usable. Opel reworked the cooling system to handle the extra strain.

Software tuning wasn't the whole story. The front-wheel-drive hatchback also gets a mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, a lowered sport chassis, revised axles and anti-roll bars, hydraulic dampers, and four-piston Alcon brakes. The 18-inch wheels wear Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires in a 215/40 R18 size.

Inside, sport seats with integrated head restraints, yellow seatbelts, and dedicated displays track g-forces, acceleration, and battery temperature. A bidirectional V2L function lets the car power external equipment — an e-bike, tools, even a coffee maker on a picnic.

Here's the catch: Opel is still holding back the numbers that actually matter to buyers. Range, charging power, and price remain unannounced. And yes, the 18.5 kWh/100 km figure mentioned in the press release belongs to the Mokka GSE crossover, not the new Corsa — that number can't be applied to the hatchback. Every spec quoted for the Corsa GSE is still preliminary; the car hasn't completed final certification.

The public debut takes place at the Paris Motor Show, running October 12–18, 2026, with a European market launch planned before year's end. There's been no official word on Corsa GSE deliveries to Russia.
