For more than a decade the open-top G-Class lived only in fans' dreams and at auctions. Now Mercedes-Benz has posted a fresh teaser — and the dream folds into reality right in front of you. The camouflaged prototype stows its fabric roof completely, leaving the sky open above both rows of seats. The top disappears behind the second row, roughly at the level of the spare wheel mounted on the rear door.
And now the main thing. This is no rerun of the old production G-Class convertibles, because the new car has four full side doors. The last classic G 500 Cabriolet with the short wheelbase was a two-door and left the range back in 2013, and climbing into its rear seats was an exercise in flexibility. The newcomer keeps the long body of the regular off-roader, so access to the second row should be far more civilised.
Just look at the details. The test prototype flaunts a front end in the spirit of the Mercedes-AMG G 63, the trademark side exhaust pipes and a V8 soundtrack on the video. Everything points to an AMG version. Except that Mercedes-Benz still has not confirmed the name of the production variant or the engine. So writing down the 4.0-litre V8 as a done deal is premature.
The company started this story back in September 2025, when it announced the return of the G-Class Cabriolet. Mercedes promised then that the open version would reach almost every major market, the United States included. After that the prototypes went to Austria for testing and then to Sweden for winter trials.
So when? The German outlet MBpassion claims sales could start in the autumn of 2027. According to its information, the roof mechanism is structurally related to the system of the Mercedes-AMG SL roadster, and the front section of the folded top doubles as the cover for the roof compartment. Elegant — if it holds up.
It was reported earlier that the new Mercedes GLA will continue to be built at a plant in Germany.
