A month ago the picture looked settled: the Dacia Sandero was Europe’s best-selling car, end of story. June 2026 tore that certainty apart in a single blow. Dataforce counted 32,685 registrations for the Tesla Model Y against 25,357 for the Romanian hatchback. The monthly gap — 7,328 cars, almost 29%. The electric crossover is back on top as if it had never left.
But one month is not a year. Between January and June, Europeans registered 113,127 Sanderos and 109,445 Model Ys. Dacia held on to first place. Only its cushion has shrunk to 3,682 cars — exactly the kind of volume Tesla claws back in one strong month. Third over the half-year is the Renault Clio with 107,887 cars.
And now the part that usually starts a fight in the comments. In the wider count covering the EU, EFTA and the UK, the Model Y sits at 34,050 cars, not 32,685. The difference is exactly 1,365 vehicles, and that is precisely how many Model Ys were registered in Sweden in June. No contradiction here: the number moves with the geography of the count. And 34,050 is the Model Y’s best month in Europe since March 2023.
Tesla’s comeback landed just as the whole electric market accelerated. June EV sales in Europe jumped 51% to 360,843 units, and their share climbed to 25.6% — one in every four new cars. The Model Y itself added 37.9% year on year. The Model 3 followed it up with eighth place and 17,013 registrations.
Still, hold off on declaring a winner. Registration data cannot separate the effect of discounts from stockpiled deliveries, Tesla’s quarterly rhythm and the broader surge in EV demand. The real test is July. If the Model Y keeps this pace, it will lead not just the monthly chart but the cumulative European ranking for the first time in 2026. And then it will be Dacia doing the chasing.
