Fifty thousand Blackwell GPUs, a plant for 30,000 robots a year and a humanoid on the assembly line by 2028 — Hyundai has stopped calling itself just a carmaker.

Fifty thousand NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs. A factory capable of building up to 30,000 robots a year. And a humanoid called Atlas that will step onto the assembly line alongside human workers in 2028. Hyundai Motor Group no longer wants to be just a carmaker — and on 24 July, at an AI summit in San Francisco, it explained what it intends to become instead.

The wording chosen by Executive Chair Euisun Chung sounds almost like a farewell to the industry: “Hyundai Motor Group is evolving beyond the traditional boundaries of automotive manufacturing by expanding into autonomous driving, robotics and AI-defined factories, accelerating our transformation into a Physical AI solution company.”

The key word here is data. Vehicles, plants, logistics, robots — the group treats all of it as a single information-gathering system on which AI models keep training around the clock. Improved algorithms then flow straight back into real operations, and the loop starts again. A vicious circle, except this one works in the carmaker’s favour.

Factories will be the first practical test. Atlas will start with preparing and sequencing parts — tasks where safety and consistency can be validated in advance. Component assembly follows by 2030. Not long ago this robot was doing backflips in promo videos. Now it is being put on shift.

The American robotics plant is due to reach a capacity of up to 30,000 units a year by 2028. How many of them will be humanoids, the group will not say — and that is arguably the loudest silence in the entire presentation.

The automotive half of the strategy rests on two names: NVIDIA and Waymo. Hyundai and Kia are building a single autonomous driving architecture on the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion platform, scalable from Level 2 to Level 4. And the HMGMA plant in Georgia will turn out specially prepared IONIQ 5 vehicles for Waymo’s driverless service. Such cars need redundant steering, braking, power and communications, power-operated doors and hardened cybersecurity — so this is not an ordinary production EV with an over-the-air update.

Boston Dynamics deserves a chapter of its own: to give Atlas a “brain”, the company has entered a strategic partnership with Google DeepMind. The Koreans have had the hardware for years. Now they are assembling the team for the software.

One more element is the Robot Reference Platform, which Hyundai is developing together with NVIDIA. Universities, research institutes and startups are promised a standardised hardware and software environment along with research robot models. Launch dates and the list of available machines have not been named. Those details will show whether the project becomes an open industry system or stays a closed programme for a handful of partners.

And the ultimate goal Chung laid out in San Francisco reaches far beyond the factory floor: from intelligent devices to intelligent spaces, and on to intelligence at the level of an entire city, where energy, mobility and robots are wired into a single managed organism. For now it sounds like a presentation. It will be tested in 2028, on a production line in Georgia.
