Three cylinders — and instantly that suspicious look. It shakes, it drones, it barely pulls. Partly true: this layout really does have a built-in quirk. But calling it a fault is plain wrong. With the crank throws set 120 degrees apart, the inertial forces largely cancel each other out, yet a rocking moment around the middle cylinder remains. That is exactly what reaches you as a shiver at idle and as low-frequency vibration. SAE research confirms it: a balance shaft knocks those tremors down to a perfectly acceptable level.
And engineers do not stop at one shaft. In come dedicated powertrain mounts, body and exhaust tuning, active noise cancellation. BMW fitted its three-cylinder engines with a separate counterbalance shaft, while Nissan reworked the whole engine mounting system to silence the low-frequency drone. So the verdict “any engine like this is automatically coarse and loud” sounds far too categorical.
And now the biggest myth of all — power. It is not tied to the cylinder count at all. The three-cylinder Toyota GR Corolla of the 2026 model year makes 300 hp and around 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). That is not a typo. The 1.5-litre Nissan Rogue delivers 201 hp and 305 Nm (225 lb-ft). Displacement, boost, injection pressure, cooling and calibration decide the outcome — not a single figure on the spec sheet.
But there is a catch, and it is an unpleasant one. Serious output from a small displacement demands turbocharging and far more delicate thermal management. Only that is the price of any highly stressed modern engine, not a curse of three cylinders. A naturally aspirated triple can be as simple as a hammer. A powerful four-cylinder turbo, meanwhile, is markedly more complex and more expensive to repair.
So what should you do before buying? Stop counting cylinders and start listening to the actual car. Fire it up cold. Sit in D with your foot on the brake. Accelerate from 1500–2500 rpm. Judge the noise at motorway speed.
A mild, characterful shiver is character, not a breakdown. But heavy knocking, a hunting idle or a vibration that appeared out of nowhere — that is your cue to book a diagnostic check. The cylinder count tells you about the engine’s layout. About its reliability it says nothing at all.
