The smart #5 Premium just got a cheaper-to-ignore sibling — and the price for extra grip is paid in range. Electric smart #5 Premium is getting an all-wheel-drive version: until now, that trim came only with rear-wheel drive, while the dual-motor setup was reserved for other versions of the model. The rear-wheel-drive Premium stays put — it’s not going anywhere.
The privilege costs €2,500. And that’s not a bare surcharge for numbers on paper: with the second motor, buyers keep every bit of Premium kit — Sennheiser sound system, ventilated front seats, heated rear bench and double-glazed side windows. Exact pricing will depend on the market.
Better grip, though, comes at a cost — and that cost is range. The claimed figure drops from 590 to 540 km on the WLTP cycle, while energy consumption climbs from 18.4 to 19.9 kWh per 100 km. Nothing surprising here: those are exactly the numbers smart already quotes for the rear-wheel-drive Pro+ and Premium, and for the existing all-wheel-drive #5 versions.
Alongside the extra power, the brand is adding some style too. The smart #1, #3 and #5 all get a new Black Collection — a package built on the Pro+ trim that, according to the source, costs €600. It bundles black paint, dark body elements and dedicated wheels. The #5 also gets black 19-inch wheels and flush door handles. No technical changes here — looks only.
The updated lineup rolls out on July 30 in Italy and Spain. Other European markets are expected to follow gradually, but smart hasn’t said exactly when or at what prices — no official statement with a full schedule and country list has been published yet.
It was previously reported that the new smart #2 will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October.
