While Europe’s biggest automakers slash costs and send workers home, Tesla is doing the exact opposite. The company has finished hiring the first thousand employees for its production expansion at the Grünheide plant near Berlin. A spokeswoman for the American automaker told the dpa news agency on July 31.
The new hires exist for one reason: to push weekly output from 5,000 to 6,200 vehicles. The plant builds electric Model Y crossovers and ships them to more than 30 markets. Around 11,000 people already work at the site — and that’s not the ceiling.
The next phase is set for October 2026, when Tesla plans to push production to 7,500 cars a week. Hiring for another thousand jobs starts as early as September. In total, the company has promised up to 3,500 new positions — 1,500 of them in battery cell manufacturing.
Tesla previously said it would invest $250 million — about €217 million — in battery production at Grünheide. That next stage of the vehicle output ramp-up is set to begin in October as well.
