All this time, Audi was betting on electric vehicles — and in America, the bet didn't pay off. The brand was left without hybrids or plug-in models exactly when buyers hadn't given up on them. The result: Audi's deliveries in North America fell from 98,712 to 82,187 vehicles in the first half of 2026 — down 16.7%. Now the company is set to fix that.
Audi of America President Vito Paladino confirmed to Automotive News that hybrids are coming to the lineup. The company is currently deciding which segments and models make commercial sense for the expansion. As for specifics — no models, no timeline — the executive didn't name any.
And here's the irony: there's nothing to invent. Audi already has a broad e-hybrid lineup in Europe, and demand for it keeps growing — the brand's plug-in hybrid deliveries jumped 147% in the first half of the year, with orders in Western Europe up 117%. The technology is ready. It's the decision that's missing.
The most obvious candidate for a trip across the Atlantic is the Audi Q5 e-hybrid. The European version pairs a gasoline engine with an electric motor for up to 367 hp, and can run on electric power alone for up to 62 miles (101 km) on the WLTP cycle. The battery holds 20.7 kWh. The 2026 Q5 in the American lineup currently has no such powertrain on offer.
Whether the Q5 e-hybrid will actually reach the US remains an editorial guess, not a confirmed announcement. But the ready-made European variant gives Audi a way to move toward certification and work out the business case right now, without waiting for the next full model generation.
The real test of Paladino's words will come with the announcement of the first volume hybrid models and the start of their US certification. Until then, his promise is a signal of a strategy shift — not a guarantee of a specific car or a specific date.
