Nobody expected an ordinary ceiling-mounted camera to spark a debate. Experts took a closer look at the interior camera in the 2027 MINI Cooper — and tore into the very idea of snapping passenger selfies and hooking the device up to mobile services.
MINI’s official documentation leaves no doubt: the camera comes packed with modes. It shoots single frames and bursts, fires automatically the moment it catches a smile, runs on a three-second timer, and records short clips. All of it can be pushed straight to a smartphone over Wi-Fi.
Through the MINI app, owners can peek inside the cabin remotely at any time. That’s not all — the camera doubles as an anti-theft recorder: trip the alarm, and the system starts recording and pings your phone. There’s also a separate seat-occupancy mode, where nothing gets saved at all.
To make any of this work, you have to accept the privacy policy and allow recording or data transfer. The camera can be switched off, too. One thing you can’t do is scroll through saved footage on the central screen while the car is moving — that restriction is strict.
MINI’s interior camera is available on both the two-door and four-door 2027 MINI Cooper in the US — but only if you spring for the top-tier Iconic trim.
