Mercedes-AMG launches the electric GT 53 in Germany on August 13 from 115,430 euros — 39,270 below the GT 55. Two motors, 544 PS, up to 809 km of range and 600 kW charging. The catch? The numbers are still preliminary.

The electric Mercedes-AMG just became 39,270 euros cheaper — and no, this is not a sale, it is an entirely new version. The four-door GT 53 goes on sale in Germany on August 13 priced from 115,430 euros, while the GT 55 that arrived in spring asks at least 154,700 euros. Yet the “junior” AMG still delivers 544 PS, or 536 hp, and 800 Nm. Not bad for an entry ticket, right?

Under the skin, the GT 53 differs from the GT 55 and GT 63 far more than the badge suggests. The senior versions carry three axial-flux electric motors and, in their most extreme form, unleash up to 860 kW — a staggering 1169 PS. The GT 53 takes a different route: two synchronous motors, a main one at the rear and an on-demand unit up front, plus a two-speed gearbox on the rear axle.

Acceleration is calmer, too. Mercedes claims 3.5 seconds to 100 km/h, but there is a catch: the figure comes from the American 1-foot rollout method, which ignores the first 30.48 cm of movement. The honest number without rollout is 3.9 seconds. Top speed is limited to 230 km/h, or 250 km/h with the AMG Driver’s Package.

Long-distance driving, meanwhile, is the GT 53’s trump card. The usable capacity of the 800-volt battery is 106 kWh, and the preliminary range is from 682 to 809 km on the WLTP cycle depending on configuration. Peak fast-charging power is quoted at an impressive 600 kW: a 10 to 80% top-up should take 11 minutes. And in ten minutes Mercedes promises to pump in around 70 kWh — up to 534 km of calculated range.

There is, however, an important caveat. Mercedes openly admits that the consumption, range and charging figures are still preliminary — the car has not yet received final values from an officially recognized testing organization, nor its European type approval. So for now, 809 km and 600 kW are better treated as declared targets rather than final certified specifications.

One more detail that will make purists clutch their heads is the artificial sound. The AMGFORCE Sport+ mode reproduces the character of the 3.0-liter inline-six from the previous Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupé, while the electronics simulate gear changes with a brief interruption in thrust. To record the original soundtrack, engineers set up microphones in 16 positions and ran more than 100 measurements. Serious work for the sake of a beautiful illusion.

In the end, the GT 53 is far more than a detuned version of the senior electric AMGs. It costs roughly a quarter less than the GT 55, gets a different powertrain and leans much harder toward range. Yes, you will have to sacrifice the extreme performance. But 3.9 seconds to 100 km/h and 544 PS still leave it far beyond the usual idea of a “base version”.
