According to the latest annual testing conducted jointly by the Central Association of the German Automotive Industry (ZDK) and the German Transport Service (DVW), roughly one in three passenger cars—27.8%—has faults in the lighting system.

The most widespread issue is incorrect headlight alignment, which either fails to illuminate the road effectively or dazzles oncoming drivers. A seemingly minor deviation behind the lens turns into a major problem out on the road, where visibility and glare are two sides of the same safety coin.

The picture looks even bleaker for commercial vehicles: 32.1% exhibit lighting defects. The figures leave little doubt that proper headlight setup belongs near the top of any maintenance checklist, because the payoff—clearer vision for one driver and less glare for another—is immediate.
