Your Car Could Soon Drive Itself to the Charger and Plug In Alone

Huawei has unveiled a concept where the car drives itself to a charger, parks, and a robotic arm plugs in the cable — no driver required. A commercial launch date has not been announced.

No cable in your hand, no waiting by the charger — Huawei has shown a scenario where a robot does all of it instead of the driver. The car finds a free charging spot on its own, parks itself there, and a robotic arm inserts and removes the connector without a human ever touching it.

Still, there’s no need to rush out and buy a car for this feature just yet. Huawei is careful to note that the demonstration is not a promise of a commercial rollout. In the scenario, everything starts with a command in the Huawei Qiankun app. From there, the ADS system plots a route inside the parking area, the car takes the free space, and it opens its own charging port. A camera-equipped mechanism locates the connector, aligns itself, and plugs in the plug — a human is not involved at any point.

While charging is underway, battery status and the estimated finish time are sent straight to the owner’s phone, and payment is supposed to happen automatically too. Once it’s done, the car disconnects and drives itself to wherever the owner specified. The idea isn’t new, either: back on April 23, Huawei folded “charging by appointment” into its concept for a “10-minute Qiankun life circle.”

Huawei’s official ADS page already describes a similar scenario: the car finds a charging spot, lowers a parking lock, opens its port, connects on its own, and moves elsewhere once charging is finished. But there’s an important line Huawei isn’t crossing here — the current ADS is still a driver-assistance system, not a full self-driving one.

The company is upfront about it: not every car supports the features shown, some may only arrive through future OTA updates, and drivers using the production version of ADS are required to stay in control of the vehicle. The potential audience is already massive, though — as of July 16, Huawei reported partnerships with more than 25 brands and 50 models, and the number of cars running Qiankun ADS has topped 1.9 million.

If a service like this really goes mainstream, the robot with the charging gun won’t be the big story. What matters is that an EV could free up the charger on its own, without its owner ever coming back — and that changes the whole problem of occupied charging spots.
