The 2000 Km BYD Battery Everyone Is Talking About Doesn't Actually Exist Yet

BYD published patent CN122474592A on July 28, 2026 for a dual-electrolyte cathode, but the promised 2000 km range still has no vehicle behind it.

BYD's future solid-state battery just got a concrete technical detail. What it still doesn't have is a 2000-km electric car. On July 28, 2026, patent application CN122474592A was published: its cathode combines halide and sulfide electrolytes with different particle sizes. The goal is straightforward — improve contact between the solid components and cut the side reactions that eat away at battery life and high-current output.

BYD does have real deadlines. Sun Huajun, the technical director of the company's battery division, has previously talked about demonstration use of fully solid-state batteries starting around 2027. A move to large-scale volumes is expected around or after 2030. In 2026, BYD's chief scientist Lian Yubo also described the technology as being at a critical development stage, pointing to manufacturing complexity, cost and yield as the main obstacles.

That's exactly where the 2000-km number falls apart. Cell energy density doesn't translate directly into vehicle range. Even with a major jump in density, a manufacturer might spend that gain on shrinking the battery's mass and size instead of doubling range. The result also depends on pack capacity, aerodynamics, energy consumption, temperature and the measurement cycle. Patent CN122474592A itself contains no mention of 2000 km at all.

BYD's current commercial priority tells the same story. In March 2026, the company unveiled the second generation of its regular liquid-electrolyte Blade Battery with FLASH Charging: officially rated at 10% to 70% in five minutes and up to 97% in nine minutes. That's the technology already headed for real cars, while solid-state chemistry remains the next chapter — still on paper for now.

So the date that actually matters is 2027. If BYD really does roll out demonstration vehicles with sulfide solid-state cells, that's the first point where their real capacity, weight, charging speed and consumption can be assessed. Only then does talk of a four-digit range get an actual automotive basis. Not before.
